About the Event
Time and Location
Whitewater Ranch Scott Bar, CA
June 6, 1:00pm- June 9, 1:00pm
Whitewater Ranch is in a remote part of northern California, about an hour drive from Yreka, CA. As such, we typically carpool/caravan from a couple of different locations. Below are some options to consider, but if you have any questions, you can contact the following staff based on your region:
Pacific Northwest (WA, OR): Jason Allred- 310.739.7798
CA Bay Area: Matthew Crane- 650.814.4112
Northern CA/Northern NV: Steve Burdick- 916.765.5247
CA Central Valley/Central Coast: Pace Johnson- 559.284.8059
Southern CA/Southern NV: Eric Salazar- 916.524.3247
Southern CA/San Diego CA: Anthony Marzett- 951.526.3291
Arizona: David Gannon: 334.790.3995
Leaving from the Pacific Northwest (WA, OR): Staff Jason Allred lives in Gig Harbor, WA. If you would like to carpool or caravan with him, contact him for specific details including dates/pick-up times/pick-up locations. You can either meet at his house or somewhere along the I-5 corridor between Tacoma, WA in the north and Ashland, OR in the south.
Leaving from Northern CA/Northern NV: Staff Steve Burdick lives in Roseville, CA, just outside of Sacramento, CA. The largest group leaves from his home on 6/6 for Whitewater Ranch at 8:30am. Several other groups (read below) will join up at Steve’s house to depart together. If you live in the greater Sacramento region or northern Nevada, plan on arriving at Steve’s home by 8am on 6/6. We will arrive back at Steve’s home on 6/9 by 6pm. Contact Steve for specific details including his home address and pick-up locations/times along the I-5 corridor between Sacramento and Yreka.
Leaving from CA Bay Area: Staff Matthew Crane lives in Napa, CA. You can drive yourself to Sacramento to meet at Steve’s home (see above) or contact Matthew for information about carpooling from Matthew’s home or getting picked-up along the I-80 corridor between Cordelia and Davis.
Leaving from CA Central Valley/Central Coast: Staff Pace Johnson lives in Fresno, CA. If you’d like to carpool from the Fresno area or along the HWY-99 corridor from Fresno to Stockton, contact Pace for specific details including when to arrive at his home, pick-up locations/times and (especially if you’re coming from the central coast) potential sleeping arrangements for the night before in Fresno. Plan on arriving back at Pace’s home by 9pm on 6/9.
Leaving from Southern CA, San Diego, Southern NV, AZ: Staff Eric Salazar lives in La Mirada, CA, near Anaheim, CA. He will leave for Steve’s house on 6/5 at 12pm. If you would like to carpool from the southern California area, contact Eric for specifics including his address, and potential pick-up locations/times on 6/5 along the I-5 corridor between La Mirada and Sacramento. Plan on returning to Eric’s home by 12am on 6/10.
Flying: If none of the carpooling/caravan options work for you or if you’re traveling from out of state, plan on arriving at Sacramento (SMF) on either 6/5 at/after 5pm or on 6/6 before 9am. Schedule your departing flight for at/after 6pm on 6/9. Contact Steve Burdick for information about airport pick-up and potential sleeping arrangements if flying in on 6/5.
Basic Retreat Expectations
Once picked up by CGF staff, all meals and activities associated with the retreat are covered by CGF’s generous donors. If you’re part of the large caravan leaving from Sacramento, plan on a 5 hour drive up to Whitewater Ranch on the first day of the retreat. Cell coverage near Whitewater ranch is very limited, so don’t anticipate receiving calls/texts from roughly 1pm 6/6- 1pm 6/9. While the ranch has some really nice amenities (comfortable bathrooms and single stall showers), this is essentially a camping trip: we sleep outside, we eat outside, we play outside. If you’ve never gone camping before this is about as soft an entry as you can hope for and we’ll make sure that you have everything you need to have an incredible trip.
The first day of the retreat is essentially an orientation to Whitewater Ranch, CGF, your fellow retreatants, and topics of conversation for the week. Days two and three we get out on the water and spend most of the days rafting on the Klamath River. Adventure Whitewater provides excellent rafting guides for our trip who keep us on course and keep us having a lot of fun. Our final day we wrap up our study on a relationship with Jesus, pack up, and head back home.
Below is the suggested packing list. If you need help getting any of the items below, please contact your local CGF staff as we may have extras for you to borrow or keep.
Packing List
-sleeping bag
-pillow
-air mattress/sleeping pad
-swim shorts or speedos (Eric Salazar has plenty of these you can borrow!) =) -river shoes (teeva sandal type shoes are great! Old tennis shoes that you don't mind getting wet work fine too. Crocs and flip-flops are not good options for the river)
-other shoes or sandals for around camp (Crocs and flip-flops are great for this)
-t-shirt(s)
-sweat shirt, sweat pants, jacket, etc. (One warm outfit will be nice to have because even though it should be hot during the day, the temperatures usually get pretty cool at night)
-sunscreen
-sunglasses (an older pair for the river is ideal as sometimes these seem to get lost/broken during water fights!)
-hat(s)
-beach towel
-toiletries
-Bible (we are glad to provide one if you don’t have your own)
-journal/pen
-if you are left handed, bring one wedge for River Golf Championships that you don't mind getting banged up on rocks, etc. We have plenty of right handed wedges already there!
